Ingrown toenails are a fairly common condition. This happens when the side of a toenail grows in the flesh. This digging in of the nail results to redness, pain, and swelling. If the ingrown nail causes a break in the skin, bacteria may enter and cause infection.
There are various reasons for the development of ingrown toenails. These include trauma, heredity, improper trimming or cutting the nails too short, shoes that are too tight or short, and nail conditions such as fungal infections.
Many home remedies are done for ingrown toenails. These include soaking the foot in warm water thrice a day, wearing comfortable shoes, taking ibuprofen or NSAIDs for pain relief.
However, do not attempt “bathroom surgery” or DIY ingrown nail surgery. The biggest risk with an ingrown nail is that it may become infected.
If there is severe pain, excessive inflammation, swelling, or discharge, it is best to see your doctor to avoid untoward complications.
