Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. This happens when the plantar fascia is inflamed, which is the thick band of tissue running across the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes.
Common symptoms are stabbing pain that occurs with your first steps in the morning. This normally improves as you get up and move more. However, it can also cause pain when standing for long periods or after rising from sitting.
Repetitive stretching and tearing can cause the plantar fascia to become inflamed or irritated. When the tension and stress becomes too much, the fascia can have small tears.
If you ignore plantar fasciitis, this can result in chronic heel pain that will eventually affect your normal activities.
For treatment, around 85 to 90 percent of patients do well with conservative care. This includes NSAIDs, stretching techniques, shoe inserts or custom orthotics, injections, ESWT or extracorporeal shockwave therapy, along with local physical therapy.
Surgery is recommended for cases that do not respond to these conservative, nonsurgical treatments.
There are several techniques in plantar fascia surgery. One of these is endoscopic plantar fascia release, a minimally traumatic procedure for chronic plantar fasciitis.
Enoscopic plantar fascial release complications are reduced in comparison with traditional open plantar fascia surgery. Also, there is lesser postoperative pain and fewer complications.
The open procedures can be avoided when the problem is identified early and treated properly. Thus it is essential to see your podiatrist for evaluation early on. Plantar fascia release allows patients to return to regular activities much sooner and with less discomfort.
See the video of the actual endoscopic surgical procedure under Dr. Kevin Lam. This is a quick procedure, takes Dr. Lam around 30 minutes or less.
