Neuroma is a growth of nerve tissue. A Morton’s neuroma is most commonly found on the space between the second and third toes or the third and fourth toes which results in the entrapment of the affected nerve. Its incidence is 8 to 10 times greater in women than in men.
The exact cause is not known but there are factors that are associated with its formation such trauma, tight footwear, high heels, repeated stress on the feet and toes.
Although symptoms may come and go, a Morton’s neuroma will not disappear on its own. More than 80% of people with neuroma will respond to various conservative treatments.
It is best to manage neuromas with conservative treatments. Neuroma surgeries are highly unpredictable and can have painful results if you have not tried other treatments prior. Regrowth, stump neuromas, and new neuromas are common.
If you are a neuroma sufferer, consult your podiatrist for a non-invasive treatment that will help you avoid neuroma surgery.
In a new study published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, researchers found Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) to be a safe and effective treatment for Morton’s neuroma, resulting in reduced pain.
