Gout Treatments
Gout is a type of arthritis wherein pain and swelling develops in the joints. This is most common at the base of the big toe.
The symptoms include intense pain in the affected joint, swollen, hot joints, red skin that is very tender to the touch.
What causes gout?
There are a variety of factors that can lead to gout such as metabolism and blood disorders that can cause the body to produce too much uric acid.
Certain food can also increase uric acid such as red meat, organ meats, and shellfish.
Factors such as family history also increase your risk of having gout. Women are more likely than men to develop gout. Postmenopausal women are also most likely to have gout. Taking more than two drinks of alcohol per day is also said to put you at higher risk of gout. Some medications and health conditions can also put you at risk of gout. The doctor can make a diagnosis of gout based on physical examination, medical history, and presenting symptoms. Tests for uric acid buildup on the joint may also be done as well as can x-ray of the affected joint.
The treatment of gout depends on its stage and severity. Medications include NSAIDs to reduce pain and inflammation, colchicines to reduce joint pain, corticosteroids to reduce pain and inflammation, drugs to reduce the production of uric acid such as allopurinol, and medications to help the body eliminate uric acid, such as probenecid.
Lifestyle changes also help in the control of gout. This includes reducing alcohol intake, avoiding food high in purines, and losing weight. In some cases, gout is so severe that it does not respond well to conventional treatments. In more advanced gout, the large nodules of uric acid crystals surround the affected joints. If the swelling persists, surgery is often performed. When the gout has already destroyed the joint, fusing the smaller joints will limit movement and relieve pain. In some cases, joint replacement is done. The affected joint is removed and replaced with artificial parts to relieve pain and restore function.
