The peroneals are two muscles and their tendons that attach along the outer edge of the lower leg. Subluxation or dislocation of the peroneal tendons involves an elongation, avulsion, or a tear of the superior peroneal retinaculum. With subluxation, one or both tendons have slipped out of their normal position.
In some patients, subluxation is due to an inborn condition in which a person has a variation in the shape of the bone or muscle. Sometimes, subluxation occurs after a foot trauma such as an ankle sprain. The damage to the tissues that stabilize the tendon can bring about chronic tendon subluxation.
