Ingrown toenails can be very painful. This occurs when a sharp corner of the toenail digs into the skin at the side of the toe. The result is pain, swelling, redness, and even a risk for infection. The most commonly affected is the big toe.
Common signs and symptoms
- Redness around the toenail
- Tenderness and pain in the toe along the sides of the nail
- Swelling of the toe around the nail

- Have diabetes or conditions that cause poor blood flow to your feet
- Experience severe pain or redness
- If there is no improvement after three days of home care
How to prevent ingrown toenails
- Trim the nails straight across
- Wear shoes that fit properly
- Avoid trimming the toenails too short
- Check your feet daily especially if you have diabetes
What happens when an ingrown nail is left untreated?
- Can lead to infection of the underlying bone
- Can develop and abscess
