As a foot and ankle surgical resident on Miami Beach’s Mount Sinai as well as Jackson Memorial Trauma Center I have seen my fair share of trauma related to hurricane preparation. Did you know that more foot and ankle injuries happen as preparation for the storm than during? Be safe. What you want to know now. Common foot / ankle injuries seen:
- Foreign objects in the leg/foot from trying to clear brushes, thorns, etc just finished taking out a thorn of of a guy’s leg today 9/6/2017 at 10am.
- Shutters dropped on toes and feet can cause an amputation of the area, wear steel toe boots if
possible or hire someone to put them up. Use teamwork when putting up shutters and don’t wait until the winds pick up to put them up, put them up now as winds are normal 9/6/2017 in Naples, FL
- When using ladders please use a spotter, a fall from even 4 feet can cause crippling heel fractures / ankle fractures.
- Stepping on nails, etc. must be treated ASAP for tetanus vaccination and cleanout then antibiotics
- Wear water shoes when outside, never go barefoot, you never know what is under the water.
- Wet socks and shoes, change out to dry when possible.
- Diabetics with wounds, please keep those feet and legs dry as bacteria and hazards are abound in the storm water.
- Alligators, snakes in the overflow of storm water, we have all seen those on social media feeds, watch where you are stepping and heading.
- Evacuate when told, do not wait until the very last minute.
