Fungal infection of the nails of onychomycosis may affect one or several of the toenails or fingernails. These are common infections primarily caused by dermatophytes. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, thus can easily affect the toenails. When the nail gets infected, these can cause the nail to become thick, discolored, and prone to breakage and cracking.

Factors that can increase risk of developing nail fungus:

• Walking barefoot in damp public areas such as pools, shower rooms, and gyms
• History of athlete’s foot
• Having a skin or nail injury
• Having diabetes
• Having a weakened immune system
• Sweating heavily

Nail fungus can be difficult to treat. If over the counter nonprescription medications have not help resolve you fungus problem, see your podiatrist.
