Toe fractures are quite common. These can result from accidents such as kicking something or dropping a heavy object on the toes. Overuse and repetitive stress can also cause broken toes such as in impact sports like basketball and running. A fracture or break in these bones can be painful and can affect how your foot functions.
Signs and symptoms of broken toes include:
- Pain or tenderness on walking and weight bearing.
- Bruising or discoloration. This can extend to nearby parts of the foot.
- Swelling
- Redness
- Blood under toenail.
- Stiffness.
- Cold or numb sensation in the toes.
- Crooked or abnormal appearance of the toe.
If you suspect that you have a broken toe, it is important to see your podiatrist as soon as possible. You may think that it’s only a minor injury, but a toe fracture that is not treated can lead to chronic foot pain, decreased tolerance for activity, and can affect the way you walk.
The foot is a complex structure. Fractures of the toe and metatarsal bones are quite common and require proper evaluation. A foot and ankle surgeon should be seen for correct diagnosis and treatment.
