Heel pain in children is not as uncommon as you think. But kids, like adults, should never “play through the pain” in their feet.
If a child complains of heel pain, tenderness in the back of the foot or ankle or is limping, walking on their toes, they may have Achilles tendinitis or Sever’s Disease.
Sever’s Disease or calcaneal aphophysitis is the most common cause of heel pain in children. Active children who play football, soccer, basketball, and tennis with this type of foot pain usually complain of pain in the region of the heel bone after activity.
Sometimes, RICE – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation – may resolve pain. Over the counter medications, using supportive shoes, and stretching exercises may also help. but if pain persists, it is time to see a foot specialist for proper evaluation.
Ignoring heel pain in children can lead to more severe problems and chronic pain. When seen early by a podiatrist, this can be treated easily by using custom heel inserts or orthotics, stretching exercises and physical therapy.
The longer your child suffers with heel pain, the harder it is to go away. If your child has repeated bouts of heel pain, be sure to make an appointment with your foot and ankle surgeon.
