Do Foot Neuromas Go Away on their Own?

A Morton’s neuroma is a swollen, inflamed nerve between the bones at the ball of the foot. The most common location is between the third and fourth toes and the next common locations is between the second and third toes. It is more common in women, with a female to male ratio of 4:1.

There are different causes for neuroma, the most common ones are foot deformities such as bunions, hammertoes, high arches, and flatfeet. These increase the risk for nerve compression. Certain activities that involve repeated irritation on the ball of the foot such as tennis, running, basketball may also contribute to its formation. Wearing tight shoes with a pointy toe box as well as high-heeled shoes.

Neuromas of the foot usually begin as tingling or numbness. Over time, the symptoms may progressively worsen. The pain may intensify when the neuroma enlarges, leading to persistent pain that may last for several days to weeks.

The treatment for neuroma varies, depending on the severity of the condition. Previous treatments both by the patient and health care provider that have failed must be taken into account.

Morton’s neuroma is a common problem. Early diagnosis and management is important to help you avoid surgery.

Consult with a foot and ankle surgeon if you have the following symptoms:

  • Numbness or tingling between the toes
  • Burning pain in the ball of the foot that worsens with activity
  • Sharp, burning pain while walking or standing
  • Feeling of a pebble or marble is in the shoe
  • Feeling that a sock is bunched up in the shoe
  • Pain and swelling under the balls of the feet

A Morton’s neuroma will not disappear on its own. The symptoms will usually come and go, depending on the type of shoes worn and how much time you spend on your feet.

Podiatric medical care should be sought when you have these early signs of pain or discomfort. If left untreated, neuroma can lead to permanent nerve damage.
