Ingrown toenails can be very painful, commonly affecting the big toe. An ingrown nail occurs when a sharp corner of the toenail digs into the skin at the side of the toe. The result is pain, swelling, redness, and even a risk for infection.
Common signs and symptoms
• Redness around the toenail
• Tenderness and pain in the toe along the sides of the nail
• Swelling of the toe around the nail
See your doctor if you
• Have diabetes or conditions that cause poor blood flow to your feet
• Experience severe pain or redness
• If symptoms don’t go away
How to prevent ingrown toenails
• Trim the nails straight across
• Wear shoes that fit properly
• Avoid trimming the toenails too short
• Check your feet daily especially if you have diabetes
What happens when an ingrown nail is left untreated?
An ingrown toenail can cause irritation when the nail grows into the skin. It often creates warmth, swelling, and tenderness in the affected toe.
When there is a break in the skin caused by an ingrown nail, bacteria may enter and cause infection in the area. This can lead to drainage and foul odor.
What are the common causes of ingrown toenails?
• Improper trimming. This is the most common cause. When you cut your nails too short, this encourages the skin next to the nail to fold over the nail.
• Improperly sized footwear. Wearing socks and shores that are too tight or short can also lead to ingrown toenail formation.
• Nail conditions. Fungal infections can lead to formation of ingrown nails.
• Heredity. In many people, the tendency to develop ingrown toenails is inherited.
• Trauma. Activities that involve repeated pressure on the toes such as running or kicking can lead to ingrown toenails. Having an object fall on your toes, stubbing your toe, or trauma can also be a cause.
