There are many different lumps and bumps that can appear on the feet.
Most common causes are calluses. These are usually due to ill-fitting footwear. It can form in areas of the foot that experience a lot of friction.
Bunions are one of the most common reason for bump on the big toe. A bunion is a bony protrusion at the base of the big toe. This happens when the joint between the long metatarsal bones and the big toe become misaligned. These may be due to genetics, structural abnormalities, hormones i.e. during pregnancy that can soften the ligaments of the foot, constant wearing of high heels that force the load to the front of the foot.
Morton’s neuroma is a painful condition that is caused by thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to the toes. This may feel like you are standing on a pebble in your shoe, your toes may also burn or feel numb.
Plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot or nodule that forms on the arch of the foot. It may be painful when pressure is applied. It can develop in one or both feet. The pain is often caused by shoes pushing against the lump in the arch.
Bursitis is inflammation of a small fluid-filled sac called a bursa. This protects the area from friction but can become inflamed from irritation from shoes or repetitive motion. Pain is accompanied by redness and swelling.
Plantar warts are small, fleshy bumps that usually appear on the heels or other weight-bearing areas of the feet. These are caused by HPV, a virus that enters the body through tiny breaks or cuts at the bottom of the feet. These may cause pain or tenderness when walking or standing.
Treatments for painful bumps on the feet vary widely depending on the cause. In most of these cases, the treatment is relatively quick and effective. If you have persistent pain, swelling, or redness, visit your doctor.
