Hallux rigidus is arthritis at the base of the big toe. This causes stiffness and pain at the joint. In the long run, it can get harder to bend the toe.
This is a form of degenerative arthritis which means it results from wear and tear. Aside from stiffness and pain, hallux rigidus can result to swelling and inflammation around the joint. A bony bump may also develop on top of the joint.
Diagnosis can be made by physical examination. Xrays can identify the extent of joint regeneration and the size of bone spurs. Rarely, MRI and CT scans are needed.
For big toe joint pain, rest, ice, and over the counter painkillers or stronger medications prescribed by the physician can help relieve pain and swelling. In cases of very painful toes, steroids injected into the joint can reduce the inflammation.
If conservative treatment does not help and pain and stiffness are limiting the normal daily activities, then surgery should be considered.
