With age, the chances of developing osteoarthritis increases. This joint damage leads to pain, swelling, and deformity.
Arthritis has many causes. It can develop as a result of rheumatoid arthritis, after a fracture, or other causes. Regardless, the end result is thinning of the protective joint surface cartilage, which produces bone to bone friction. This then produces inflammation and pain.
Treatment of ankle arthritis depends on the severity of the symptoms. The initial management includes activity modification, balancing exercises, strengthening muscles around the ankles, and taking anti inflammatory medications. Maintaining an ideal weight can also help. Custom braces help take the pressure off the ankles. Stem cell therapy or platelet rich plasma therapy may also be an option for some patients.
If all these conservative treatments fail to work, surgery is the next option.
There are two types of surgery for ankle arthritis. These are ankle fusion and total ankle replacement.
