Bunions are not uncommon, especially in women. This deformity at the base of the big toe develops when the first metatarsal bone of the foot turns outward and the big toe points inward. The bony bump that develops become more prominent over time and may bring about soreness, redness, and pain on the site.
The condition is most likely to develop when feet are constantly squeezed into pointed, narrow-toe footwear. Bunions run in families and depending on your foot shape and structure, you may be more prone to bunions than others. Some factors that increase risk for bunions are flat feet, low arches, and loose tendons and joints.
High-heeled shoes can worsen the bunion because they tend to tip the weight forward, forcing the toes in the front of the shoes.
Occupations that involve a lot of standing for extended periods, walking long distances, or whose feet go through repetitive stress may also be more susceptible to bunions. Bunions are also associated with arthritis.
To relieve pain and slow down bunion progression, wear the right kind of shoes. These should have enough room in the toe box to accommodate the bunion. The soles should be flexible enough to support the feet. Keep the heels low.
Using gel pads can help relieve pain. Your clinician may recommend shoe inserts or night splints to lessen discomfort and hold the toes straight.
NSAIDs such as ibuprofen help reduce pain and inflammation.
Warm soaks, ice packs, and massage may also be helpful.
Go to physical therapy if directed. This can help improve strength, movement, and decrease pain.
All bunions are permanent unless surgically corrected.
When should you seek professional care?
Ideally, the earlier you go to a foot doctor, the better. You have better results when your bunion is seen by a professional early on. As the bunion progresses, you may have lesser treatment options suitable for your condition.
